Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is extremely common, affecting more than 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 70 years. It is defined as an inability to obtain or maintain an erection firm enough for penetration and satisfaction of both sexual partners. Erectile dysfunction can have many causes, both physical and psychological, and is often extremely distressing both personally and within a relationship. Whilst it can be embarrassing to talk about, it is important that you seek advice from your doctor as erectile dysfunction can be linked to other more serious and as yet undiagnosed health issues such as diabetes or heart disease.
If you have erectile dysfunction, it is important that you undergo a full medical assessment including investigations to exclude associated conditions such as low testosterone, hypertension, diabetes etc. First-line treatment is with a group of tablets called Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors e.g. sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra). These medications do not work for everyone and maybe less effective in those with certain conditions particularly diabetes or following prostate surgery. They are also not suitable for individuals who are taking nitrate medication for angina (e.g. GTN spray, Isosorbide Mononitrate). It is important that you check with your GP or a pharmacist that these drugs are safe for you if you are taking other medications.
Numerous other treatment options are available which range from Vitaros, a topical gel applied to the urethra (water passage) to penile injections with alprostadil or a vacuum pump. At Northwell Medical, we will provide you with a full medical assessment, appropriate investigations and advice on the most suitable treatment options.
